JK Harris implores taxpayers to seek help with upcoming random IRS audits
Taxpayers need to beware of random audits the IRS is planning.
/South Carolina News Articles/ - NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, October 13, 2007 - Think you prepared your 2006 tax return perfectly? Think the IRS won't have any reason to audit you?
Think again. The IRS will be selecting 13,000 tax returns at random to audit as part of the National Research Program, which is designed to give the IRS a better understanding of how accurately income and deductions are reported and to reduce the tax gap.
Ralph Havens, the Director of Professional Services for JK Harris and Company, the nation's largest tax resolution firm, said the random audit may not be as scary as it sounds. However, because an audit can be a bit nerve-racking, it doesn't hurt to get some professional help if need be.
"For those taxpayers who are selected for the audit, not all 13,000 will actually have a face-to-face review," said Havens, who heads up JK Harris' Audit Department. "Some will be justified through IRP (W-2s and 1099s already on file with the IRS) and a simple phone call."
According to the IRS, some taxpayers may simply be asked to provide information and documentation to support their income and deduction claims or expenses when one or two items are in question.
Others may not be quite so lucky.
"Those clients that are selected and file a business return like a Schedule C will most likely have a line-by-line audit," Havens said. "If the client keeps good records, there should be no need to worry. If they just threw the return together, they need to start gathering documentation."
And JK Harris can help.
"JK Harris offers audit representation backed by experienced Enrolled Agent professionals and Certified Public Accountants who have years of experience representing clients before the IRS," Havens said. "We can help the client gather documentation and even represent them in the audit."
